🕊️ NINE YEARS OF PEACE: MAITRI MAHOTSAVAM CELEBRATED IN KANNUR ✨

The People’s Movement for Peace, an organisation steadfastly committed to ensuring lasting peace in Kannur, celebrated its ninth anniversary along with Maitri Mahotsavam in a dignified and vibrant manner. The programme was held at the Jawahar Library Hall, Kannur, and was inaugurated by Honourable Kannur Mayor Adv. P. Indira. 🤝 In her inaugural address, the Mayor lauded the Movement, stating that “The contributions of the People’s Movement for Peace towards ensuring enduring peace in Kannur are truly unparalleled.” Her words reaffirmed the relevance of sustained civic engagement in nurturing harmony in a region historically affected by conflict.

The meeting was presided over by Chairman P. Satheesh Kumar, and the keynote address was delivered by Prof. P. Muralidharan, who highlighted the need to reinforce democratic values, dialogue, and mutual respect as foundations of a peaceful society. Bringing an international perspective on peace, Rev. Dr. Scaria Kallur, International Peace Director of the Capuchin Order, shared insights on global peace initiatives and the moral responsibility of communities to stand against violence. Dr. Muthalib Aslami, State Chairman of ACI, and Ms. M. Harikrishnan, Senior Teacher of the Art of Living, also delivered inspiring messages emphasising inner peace, social harmony, and collective responsibility.

Several leaders from the social and cultural spheres extended their greetings and solidarity, acknowledging the People’s Movement for Peace as a consistent and credible voice for non-violence in Kannur. Following the presentation of the annual report and the vote of thanks, the celebrations concluded on a joyful note with colourful cultural performances by children and other artists, adding warmth and vitality to the Maitri Mahotsavam. As the People’s Movement for Peace steps into its ninth year of dedicated service, the celebration stood as a reminder that peace is not merely an idea, but a continuous collective effort — one that grows stronger through dialogue, culture, and community participation. 🌿🕊️

PEOPLE’S MOVEMENT FOR PEACE CONDEMNS VANDALISM OF GANDHI STATUE AT PAYYANNUR RAMANTHALI

The vandalism of the Gandhi statue at the Mahatma Memorial Cultural Centre, Ramanthali, Payyannur, is an act that deserves the strongest condemnation. In response to this deeply unfortunate incident, activists of the People’s Movement for Peace, an organisation committed to the values of harmony and non-violence, visited the site and organised a strong protest meeting expressing collective outrage and concern. The protest meeting was held under the chairmanship of P. Satheesh Kumar and was inaugurated by noted social activist Karayil Sukumaran. Speakers at the meeting included Fr. Ditto, V. V. Unnikrishnan, P. V. Surendran, K. M. Thampan, K. V. Raghavan, C. V. Rajagopal, K. C. Satheeshan, N. A. V. Abdulla, Jaison, and O. Mohanan. All speakers strongly reaffirmed the relevance of peace, tolerance, and non-violence in the present social climate.

The destruction of the statue stands as a disturbing reflection of the growing culture of violence and intolerance in our society. Instead of addressing ideological differences through healthy dialogue and democratic engagement, there is an increasing tendency to resort to physical aggression and destruction of public property. Such actions pose a serious threat to democratic values, create an atmosphere of fear, and undermine social unity. This incident points to a dangerous erosion of the principle of peaceful coexistence, which is fundamental to a civilised society. Acts of vandalism directed against the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, amount to an assault on the very moral and ethical foundation of India. Gandhi is not merely a historical figure; he represents the enduring ideals of truth, non-violence, secularism, and justice upon which the nation was built. By attacking symbols associated with him, the perpetrators are in effect targeting India’s freedom struggle, its pluralistic values, and its democratic spirit. Such disrespect towards a globally revered leader is wholly unacceptable in a progressive society.

The meeting emphasised that it is the responsibility of every citizen to remain vigilant against forces attempting to erase Gandhian ideals from public consciousness. The speakers called for collective resistance, cutting across political, social, and ideological differences, against all such acts of hatred and vandalism. The protest organised by the People’s Movement for Peace was described as a necessary and timely intervention in defence of peace, love, and social harmony. The gathering concluded with the hope that sustained collective efforts like these will help instil the values of peace and tolerance in future generations, ensuring that the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi continue to guide society towards a more humane and inclusive future.

PEOPLE’S MOVEMENT FOR PEACE CONDUCTED FIELD VISIT TO PARATT FOLLOWING ELECTION-RELATED VIOLENCE

In the aftermath of recent incidents of violence linked to the Panchayat elections, a delegation from the People’s Movement for Peace conducted a field visit to Paratt, an area falling under the jurisdiction of the Kolavallur Police Station, with the objective of understanding the ground realities and contributing towards the restoration of lasting peace. During the visit, the team met leaders and representatives from both sides involved in the conflict and engaged in detailed discussions to assess the sequence of events and the current situation in the area. Based on these interactions, it was observed that the violence originated from disputes that arose during post-election celebratory processions and gatherings, which gradually escalated into confrontations and acts of violence.

As part of the fact-finding effort, the delegation collected first-hand information and official reports from the Panur and Kolavallur Police Stations, as well as from leaders of various political parties operating in the region. These interactions helped provide a clearer and more comprehensive understanding of the circumstances that led to the incidents. Importantly, leaders from all sides assured the delegation that no further such incidents would occur and expressed their willingness to cooperate in maintaining peace and communal harmony in the days ahead. There was a shared acknowledgment that political differences should not be allowed to disturb social coexistence or public safety.

The delegation also met elected councillors of the Panur Municipality, during which the objectives, principles, and ongoing peace initiatives of the People’s Movement for Peace were explained in detail. The councillors responded positively, with many expressing keen interest in extending cooperation to future peace-building and community engagement activities in the Panur region. The People’s Movement for Peace believes that dialogue, mutual respect, and timely intervention are essential to prevent conflicts and strengthen democratic values at the grassroots level. The Movement remains committed to working with local communities, elected representatives, and authorities to ensure that differences are resolved through peaceful means. The visiting delegation comprised Sri Sajeev Maniyath, Smt. Sarala Teacher, Sri Prabhakaran, and Sri Satheesh Kumar.
