PEACE MARCH AND SATYAGRAHA CALL FOR AN END TO POLITICAL VIOLENCE DRAWS WIDE PUBLIC SUPPORT

The People's Movement for Peace (PMP), in association with the Payyanur Civil Rights Protection Forum, successfully organized a Peace March and Satyagraha on 3 May 2026 at Payyanur, bringing together people from diverse walks of life in a united call for peace, non-violence, and the protection of democratic values. The programme served as a powerful public expression of the growing desire to end political violence and foster a culture of dialogue, reconciliation, and mutual respect.

The peace march commenced from the historic Gandhi Mango Tree at Anandatheertha Ashram, a place deeply associated with the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. Participants marched through the town carrying messages of peace, justice, and harmony, demonstrating their collective commitment to building a violence-free society. The Satyagraha was inaugurated in a unique and symbolic manner by renowned artist Sunitha Thrippanikkara, who created a live painting depicting the spirit of peace and hope. Her artistic expression added a powerful visual dimension to the programme, reminding the audience that art, like dialogue, has the power to unite people beyond differences.

The keynote address was delivered by eminent Gandhian thinker Dr. P. V. Rajagopal (Rajaji), whose inspiring words deeply resonated with the gathering. Drawing from a well-known parable, he reminded the audience that even the smallest efforts towards peace have immense value. "When a forest caught fire, a little sparrow carried drops of water in its tiny beak to help extinguish the flames. Though its effort seemed insignificant, it chose to do its part. Likewise, every small act for peace matters and will be remembered by history." Dr. Rajagopal emphasized that meaningful social transformation begins with individuals who are willing to stand for truth, justice, and non-violence. He urged citizens, especially young people, to reject hatred and violence and instead embrace the Gandhian values of forgiveness, compassion, and peaceful coexistence.

Speaking on the occasion, Fr. Dito Sebastian OFM Cap., Director of the Assisi Institute for Peace Studies and Coordinator of the People's Movement for Peace, expressed his gratitude to everyone who made the programme possible. He noted that although the decision to organize the event had been taken at very short notice, the overwhelming participation reflected the people's deep commitment to peace.

The programme highlighted the urgent need to end political violence, safeguard democratic values, and guide the younger generation along the path of non-violence, tolerance, and reconciliation. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to promoting dialogue over conflict and cooperation over confrontation as the foundation for a peaceful and inclusive society. The Peace March and Satyagraha concluded with a message of hope and solidarity, expressing heartfelt gratitude to every individual and organization that joined hands for the noble cause.
