🕊️ NINE YEARS OF PEACE: MAITRI MAHOTSAVAM CELEBRATED IN KANNUR ✨

The People’s Movement for Peace, an organisation steadfastly committed to ensuring lasting peace in Kannur, celebrated its ninth anniversary along with Maitri Mahotsavam in a dignified and vibrant manner. The programme was held at the Jawahar Library Hall, Kannur, and was inaugurated by Honourable Kannur Mayor Adv. P. Indira. 🤝 In her inaugural address, the Mayor lauded the Movement, stating that “The contributions of the People’s Movement for Peace towards ensuring enduring peace in Kannur are truly unparalleled.” Her words reaffirmed the relevance of sustained civic engagement in nurturing harmony in a region historically affected by conflict.

The meeting was presided over by Chairman P. Satheesh Kumar, and the keynote address was delivered by Prof. P. Muralidharan, who highlighted the need to reinforce democratic values, dialogue, and mutual respect as foundations of a peaceful society. Bringing an international perspective on peace, Rev. Dr. Scaria Kallur, International Peace Director of the Capuchin Order, shared insights on global peace initiatives and the moral responsibility of communities to stand against violence. Dr. Muthalib Aslami, State Chairman of ACI, and Ms. M. Harikrishnan, Senior Teacher of the Art of Living, also delivered inspiring messages emphasising inner peace, social harmony, and collective responsibility.

Several leaders from the social and cultural spheres extended their greetings and solidarity, acknowledging the People’s Movement for Peace as a consistent and credible voice for non-violence in Kannur. Following the presentation of the annual report and the vote of thanks, the celebrations concluded on a joyful note with colourful cultural performances by children and other artists, adding warmth and vitality to the Maitri Mahotsavam. As the People’s Movement for Peace steps into its ninth year of dedicated service, the celebration stood as a reminder that peace is not merely an idea, but a continuous collective effort — one that grows stronger through dialogue, culture, and community participation. 🌿🕊️

PEOPLE’S MOVEMENT FOR PEACE CONDEMNS VANDALISM OF GANDHI STATUE AT PAYYANNUR RAMANTHALI

The vandalism of the Gandhi statue at the Mahatma Memorial Cultural Centre, Ramanthali, Payyannur, is an act that deserves the strongest condemnation. In response to this deeply unfortunate incident, activists of the People’s Movement for Peace, an organisation committed to the values of harmony and non-violence, visited the site and organised a strong protest meeting expressing collective outrage and concern. The protest meeting was held under the chairmanship of P. Satheesh Kumar and was inaugurated by noted social activist Karayil Sukumaran. Speakers at the meeting included Fr. Ditto, V. V. Unnikrishnan, P. V. Surendran, K. M. Thampan, K. V. Raghavan, C. V. Rajagopal, K. C. Satheeshan, N. A. V. Abdulla, Jaison, and O. Mohanan. All speakers strongly reaffirmed the relevance of peace, tolerance, and non-violence in the present social climate.

The destruction of the statue stands as a disturbing reflection of the growing culture of violence and intolerance in our society. Instead of addressing ideological differences through healthy dialogue and democratic engagement, there is an increasing tendency to resort to physical aggression and destruction of public property. Such actions pose a serious threat to democratic values, create an atmosphere of fear, and undermine social unity. This incident points to a dangerous erosion of the principle of peaceful coexistence, which is fundamental to a civilised society. Acts of vandalism directed against the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, amount to an assault on the very moral and ethical foundation of India. Gandhi is not merely a historical figure; he represents the enduring ideals of truth, non-violence, secularism, and justice upon which the nation was built. By attacking symbols associated with him, the perpetrators are in effect targeting India’s freedom struggle, its pluralistic values, and its democratic spirit. Such disrespect towards a globally revered leader is wholly unacceptable in a progressive society.

The meeting emphasised that it is the responsibility of every citizen to remain vigilant against forces attempting to erase Gandhian ideals from public consciousness. The speakers called for collective resistance, cutting across political, social, and ideological differences, against all such acts of hatred and vandalism. The protest organised by the People’s Movement for Peace was described as a necessary and timely intervention in defence of peace, love, and social harmony. The gathering concluded with the hope that sustained collective efforts like these will help instil the values of peace and tolerance in future generations, ensuring that the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi continue to guide society towards a more humane and inclusive future.

PEOPLE’S MOVEMENT FOR PEACE CONDUCTED FIELD VISIT TO PARATT FOLLOWING ELECTION-RELATED VIOLENCE

In the aftermath of recent incidents of violence linked to the Panchayat elections, a delegation from the People’s Movement for Peace conducted a field visit to Paratt, an area falling under the jurisdiction of the Kolavallur Police Station, with the objective of understanding the ground realities and contributing towards the restoration of lasting peace. During the visit, the team met leaders and representatives from both sides involved in the conflict and engaged in detailed discussions to assess the sequence of events and the current situation in the area. Based on these interactions, it was observed that the violence originated from disputes that arose during post-election celebratory processions and gatherings, which gradually escalated into confrontations and acts of violence.

As part of the fact-finding effort, the delegation collected first-hand information and official reports from the Panur and Kolavallur Police Stations, as well as from leaders of various political parties operating in the region. These interactions helped provide a clearer and more comprehensive understanding of the circumstances that led to the incidents. Importantly, leaders from all sides assured the delegation that no further such incidents would occur and expressed their willingness to cooperate in maintaining peace and communal harmony in the days ahead. There was a shared acknowledgment that political differences should not be allowed to disturb social coexistence or public safety.

The delegation also met elected councillors of the Panur Municipality, during which the objectives, principles, and ongoing peace initiatives of the People’s Movement for Peace were explained in detail. The councillors responded positively, with many expressing keen interest in extending cooperation to future peace-building and community engagement activities in the Panur region. The People’s Movement for Peace believes that dialogue, mutual respect, and timely intervention are essential to prevent conflicts and strengthen democratic values at the grassroots level. The Movement remains committed to working with local communities, elected representatives, and authorities to ensure that differences are resolved through peaceful means. The visiting delegation comprised Sri Sajeev Maniyath, Smt. Sarala Teacher, Sri Prabhakaran, and Sri Satheesh Kumar.

PEOPLE’S MOVEMENT FOR PEACE: STANDING TOGETHER FOR KANNUR’S UNITY AND DEVELOPMENT

For the past several years, the People’s Movement for Peace (PMP) has been actively committed to safeguarding peace and communal harmony in Kannur. As the upcoming panchayat and municipal elections approach, PMP has launched an extensive public outreach and awareness initiative aimed at promoting peaceful elections and strengthening community cooperation. As part of its efforts to ensure a calm and constructive electoral atmosphere, a PMP delegation met with leaders of all major political parties in Kannur. The purpose of these visits was to emphasize the importance of maintaining the district’s hard-earned peace—peace that has now become a model for the rest of the state. The delegation appealed to political and social organizations to offer their full cooperation in preserving this environment, noting that sustained development can flourish only when communities remain free from conflict and tension.

The conversations underscored a key message: peaceful elections are not merely an administrative requirement but a shared social responsibility. Ensuring dignity, dialogue, and restraint throughout the electoral process is essential for the district’s continued progress. In a region that has witnessed significant transformation, PMP’s intervention serves as both a reminder and a call to collective action—urging every stakeholder to rise above differences and place the welfare of Kannur first. The PMP delegation included P. Satheesh Kumar (Chairman, PMP), Fr. Dito Sebastian, Shaju John (Literacy Mission Coordinator), Chandrababu, and Haridas Mangalassery. INTERFAITH PRAYER GATHERING HELD AS PART OF GANDHI JAYANTHI WEEK CELEBRATIONS

In connection with the Gandhi Jayanthi Week celebrations, the People’s Movement for Peace (PMP), Kannur, organized an interfaith prayer gathering on October 6 at Mahatma Mandiram. The event aimed to renew and uphold the timeless values of peace, nonviolence, and harmony championed by Mahatma Gandhi. Interfaith prayer was a central part of Gandhiji’s vision for a peaceful society. By bringing people of different faiths together in a shared space of reflection and prayer, he demonstrated that unity does not require uniformity, and that diversity can become a powerful foundation for social harmony. The gathering at Mahatma Mandiram echoed this legacy, featuring prayers and devotional songs representing multiple religious traditions, creating an atmosphere of mutual respect and spiritual togetherness.

During the gathering, PMP Chairman Satheesh Kumar spoke on the growing need to preserve communal harmony in the present social environment. He emphasized that Gandhi’s path of peace and nonviolence is not merely a historical ideal but a living guide for addressing today’s challenges. At a time when misunderstandings and divisions can easily take root, such interfaith initiatives serve as reminders of the shared values that bind communities together. The programme also highlighted the role of collective spiritual reflection in building a culture of peace. When individuals come together to pray, reflect, and listen to one another, it opens spaces for empathy, dialogue, and reconciliation. Events like these reinforce the message that peace is a continuous effort—one that requires willingness, cooperation, and a deep respect for human dignity. The interfaith gathering thus became more than a commemorative event; it stood as a symbolic commitment to fostering love, unity, and nonviolence in society. It reminded all participants that peace begins within communities and grows when people embrace differences with openness and compassion.

HIROSHIMA-NAGASAKI REMEMBRANCE: PMP REAFFIRMS ITS COMMITMENT TO PEACE EDUCATION

On Hiroshima-Nagasaki Day, the People’s Movement for Peace (PMP) stood in solidarity with the global community in honoring the memory of the victims of the atomic bombings and reflecting on the lasting impact of nuclear warfare. The day served not only as a solemn reminder of the unimaginable human cost of war but also as a call to action for a future rooted in peace and non-violence.

PMP was privileged to take part in a special commemoration program organized by World Without War and Violence, an international movement committed to disarmament and peace. The event brought together peace advocates, educators, and concerned citizens to reflect on the lessons of the past and to renew our collective responsibility to prevent such tragedies from ever recurring. Representing PMP, Fr. Ditto Sebastian delivered a compelling message on the transformative power of peace education. He emphasized that lasting peace must be cultivated from the ground up—beginning with children, and continuing through youth engagement. He underscored the importance of integrating peace values into education systems, homes, and communities, noting that without this foundation, efforts toward peace remain incomplete. At PMP, we believe that peace is not merely the absence of war, but the presence of justice, understanding, and compassion in everyday life. Our commitment to promoting peace education continues to grow stronger, especially in a world still grappling with conflict and division.

As we remember Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we carry forward a message of hope: that through education, awareness, and unity, a peaceful future is not only possible—it is our shared responsibility.
