AIPS CONDUCTS LITERACY ASSESSMENT AND EDUCATIONAL SURVEY AT NUTTIPATHU COLONY, KEEZHPALLY
The Assisi Institute for Peace Studies (AIPS) conducted a comprehensive literacy assessment yesterday for the children residing in the Nuttipathu Colony at Keezhpally. This initiative forms an important part of AIPS’s ongoing efforts to support and uplift marginalized tribal communities. The visit was carried out under the institute’s developmental project “Inspire,” which focuses on strengthening the educational foundation of children in vulnerable settlements. During the visit, the AIPS team interacted closely with the children and their families to gain a deeper understanding of their learning conditions and everyday challenges.
The primary objectives of the visit were threefold:
first, to evaluate the current academic level of the children and understand their reading, writing, and comprehension abilities; second, to observe the extent of their interest and motivation in pursuing regular studies; and third, to identify the specific areas where additional guidance, resources, or structured interventions may be necessary.
Through direct interaction and assessment activities, the team gained valuable insights into the academic situation within the settlement. The findings revealed not only the children’s eagerness to learn but also the urgent need for consistent educational support to help them progress. In response to these observations, AIPS has decided to initiate regular follow-up visits to the colony. The institute aims to nurture a positive learning culture among the children, encourage steady academic progress, and ensure that no child feels compelled to discontinue education due to external hardships. To achieve this, AIPS will introduce special learning sessions, remedial classes, and personalized guidance, designed to strengthen their academic confidence and inspire them to pursue education with renewed determination.

KEEZHPALLY NUTTIPATHU UNNATHI: A REALITY THAT URGENTLY NEEDS ATTENTION, COMPASSION, AND SUPPORT
As part of its ongoing Tribal Empowerment initiatives, the Assisi Institute for Peace Studies (AIPS) visited the Nuttipathu Unnathi in Keezhpally—an eye-opening experience that revealed the painful gap between the welfare schemes we often discuss and the ground realities faced by the people who need them most.
Although numerous government benefits exist for Scheduled Tribe communities, the condition of this unnathi shows how many families continue to remain unseen and unheard. Their shelters are fragile structures patched together with palm leaves, tarpaulin sheets, and bits of plastic, offering only minimal protection from the forces of nature. During our visit, we were confronted with scenes that were deeply distressing. Several families were trying to manage their lives under a single temporary shed. Children were attempting to study and sleep in cold, damp corners while elderly members struggled to cope with the rain that seeped in through the makeshift roofs. Every part of their daily life reflected hardship—an existence shaped more by survival than by comfort or security.
Within this small unnathi, ten students are currently studying in Class 10, and around twenty others attend lower grades. Despite their enthusiasm for learning, their circumstances make continuing their education an everyday challenge. There are also several young people who, even after completing their higher secondary education, remain unemployed and anxious about their future, unsure of how to translate their efforts into meaningful opportunities.
Seeing these realities firsthand, the Assisi Institute for Peace Studies has decided to stand beside these children and their families as a committed partner. Our intention is not merely to observe their struggles but to journey with them and ensure that their education does not get interrupted by circumstances beyond their control. By offering guidance, support, and consistent companionship, we hope to help these young minds move forward with dignity and hope.
This moment calls not simply for charity but for genuine solidarity. The future of these children depends on the compassion and collective action of all of us who are capable of making a difference. As we continue our mission to uplift and empower marginalized communities, we invite everyone to join us. Together, we can help shape a brighter and more secure future for the children of Keezhpally’s Nuttipathu Unnathi.

In his address, Mr. Thayyil emphasized the importance of building a strong, value-driven personality. He urged the children to develop confidence, discipline, and empathy as key traits for success in both personal and academic life. A critical part of his message was focused on raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse, a growing concern among young people today. Through relatable stories and practical advice, he encouraged the students to make informed choices and stay away from harmful influences. Equally important was his reminder to honor and respect their parents' guidance, reinforcing the role of family values in shaping a responsible and purposeful life.
The session was not just a lecture—it was a lively and interactive experience. Students were encouraged to ask questions, share their thoughts, and engage in meaningful dialogue with Mr. Thayyil. This open forum allowed them to clarify doubts, gain new perspectives, and feel heard—something that many found deeply motivating. The feedback from students and organizers alike was overwhelmingly positive. Many participants shared that the session helped them look at their goals, habits, and relationships in a new light. The event succeeded in igniting a spark of curiosity and self-reflection, which is precisely what Inspire aimed to achieve. By bringing together education, emotional intelligence, and life skills, AIPS continues to play a vital role in nurturing the next generation of responsible and empowered individuals. The Inspire program stands as a testament to the power of positive mentorship and the importance of creating safe, supportive spaces for youth to grow.
